Bessie's Story

Bessie Mayberry, 99, of Pekin, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin surrounded by all six of her surviving children and their families.
Born Mar. 7, 1917 in Hamilton County to George and Martha (Griswold) Hatcher, she married Halsey Mayberry on Dec. 3, 1939 in Morgan Field, KY. He died Feb. 15, 1998 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by one son, Gary A. Mayberry on Aug. 16, 2014 and his wife Carol on Oct. 25, 2011; two grandchildren, Chad Hannig and Larry Mayberry, II; one great-granddaughter, Alexa Jeanne Hannig; one great-great-grandson, Hayden Christopher Martella; one brother, Hillard Hatcher and four sisters, Olive Brandon, Opal Miller, Bernice Johnson and Mary Hatcher in infancy.
Surviving are three sons, Larry (Donna) Mayberry, Kenny (Janie) Mayberry and Kendall (Linda Smith) Mayberry, all of Pekin; three daughters, Janet (Luke) Welty of Mt. Sterling, Neva (Bud) Watson of Manito and Dianna (Russell) Diamond of Valrico, FL; twenty grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves an adopted son, Fred (Judy) Young of Pekin.
Bessie was a homemaker. Her joy was found in being with family, gardening, cooking and making jelly. She also enjoyed travel and doing embroidery work.
She was a faithful member of Pekin Church of Christ.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Evangelist Doug Hafley will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
