Robert S. “Bob” Smith, 95, of McLeansboro, died 7:11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born Feb. 15, 1920, the son of Robert L. and Ethel Ava Varney Smith. He married Martha Rhe Johson; she preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Charles David (wife Gaye) Smith of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and Phillip Ray (wife Karen) Smith of Old Lyme, Conn.; five grandchildren, Scott Andrew Smith, Erik Adam Smith, Kelly Alexandra Smith, Elizabeth Davis Corthell and Thomas Smith; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters. He retired as the manager of a wholesale grocery company in McLeansboro. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and attended First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. The Rev. Jim Peak officiated. Those attending the service went directly to the cemetery. Gholson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
