Carolyn's Story

Carolyn Kay Sloan, 78, of McLeansboro, died 12:25 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Good Samaritan Regional Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born March 21, 1937, in Broughton, the daughter of George and Grace (Farris) Scott. She married Edward Dean Sloan on Dec. 7, 1956; he passed away Sept. 29, 1989. She is survived by a son, Randy Sloan and wife Sharree of McLeansboro; a daughter, Michele Cross and husband Ed of Silver Lake, Kan.; grandchildren, Chad Sloan of Akin, Amanda Worley of Benton, Ryan Sloan and wife Heidi of Davenport, Iowa and Rachel Cross and Noah Cross of Silver Lake, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Maddison, Kaitlyn, Colten, Jaxson, Nathania, Lucas and Clark; a great-great-grandchild, Kaiden; a brother, Robert “Bob” Scott of McLeansboro; three sisters, Martha Pingleton and husband Cloyd of Raleigh; Lela McLevain of Henderson, Ky., and Karen Sue Jerashen of O’Fallon; a brother-in-law, William H. “Fuss” Gray Sr., of Dale; three sisters-in-law, Winnie Scott of Martinsville, Ind., Delores Sloan-Wolfe and husband Don of Jackson, Mich., and Clara Etta Sloan of Spring Arbor, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Gregory Dean Sloan; a sister, Helen Gray; and a brother, G.W. Scott. She was a homemaker. Kay loved to cook, spend time with family and go to church. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Christian Chapel Congregational Church, McLeansboro. The church was be open at 10 a.m. the day of the funeral. Brother Allen Spangler and Sister Ruby McDowell officiated. Burial was at Hebron Cemetery, Walpole. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Christian Chapel Congregational Church, McLeansboro. Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro is in charge of arrangements.
