Charles " Chick" Smith, 79, of McLeansboro, passed away 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at Eldorado Rehabilitation & Healthcare in Eldorado.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016 at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro.
Funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Hickory Hill Church near Walpole with the Rev. Chris Marsh officiating.
Burial was at Hickory Hill Cemetery.
He was born April 13, 1937, in Broughton, the son of Merrill and Ruth (Burhrmester) Smith. He married Emma Lee Phelps on June 23, 1962, at Star Church in Eldorado.
He was a farmer and member of Hickory Hill Baptist Church. Chick loved the outdoors and the land and he devoted his life to farming. He first began farming in partnership with his father and later with the help of his wife until his retirement in 2013. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but his greatest love was quail hunting with his boys, grandsons and lifelong friends. He accepted the Lord as his savior and was baptized and became a member of Hickory Hill Baptist Church on Oct. 17, 1948. He was ordained a deacon on March 15, 1987, and remained a devoted member until his death. He was appointed a trustee of the new Hickory Hill Cemetery in 1981 and became overseer of the cemetery in 1995 and took great joy doing this until his retirement in 2014, serving over 32 years.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Lee Smith of McLeansboro; sons, Ron Smith and wife Kim, McLeansboro and Josh Smith and wife Karen, Ballwin, Mo.; daughter, Emily Smith of Albion; five grandchildren, Kane Smith and wife Lynn;, Logan, Trase, Grant and Isla Smith; and brother, Carl Smith of McLeansboro
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Smith; and sisters, Wanda Crain and Sue Wheeler
Memorials may be amde to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson Foundation or Hickory Hill Cemetery Fund.
