Gladys L. Mendenhall, 99, of Belle Rive, passed away at 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon. Gladys was born Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1914, in Jefferson County to Glen and Irene (Williamson) Phillips. She attended Williamson Grade School for eight years, and then rode horse to Opdyke High School, graduating in 1932. Gladys was one of four children, being the only girl. Gladys was working at the hospital in Mt. Vernon when she met her future husband, Howard “Fuzz” Mendenhall, who was brought in for emergency surgery in 1933. She and Howard “Fuzz” Mendenhall were married in Morganfield, Ky., on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 1939. Gladys and “Fuzz” owned and operated Gladys’ Flower Shop at 809 Jordan in Mt. Vernon, from Nov. 27, 1951, until Sept. 15, 1966. After retiring from the flower shop, they were engaged in farming. “Fuzz” passed away Feb. 12, 1984, after 45 years of marriage. In addition to working at the hospital and flower shop, Gladys was employed at Davidson’s Bakery, Morris Store (later G.C. Murphy) and was manager at Carp’s Ready-to-Wear. She has always enjoyed mowing and taking care of her dogs and cats. From 1984 to 1995, Gladys was in a group of approximately 25 women known as the Golden Girls. They enjoyed celebrating birthdays together and going out for dinner each week, forming close friendships while socializing. Gladys is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Bob and Shirley (Phillips) Hall of Placentia, Calif.,, Sharon (Phillips) Meyers of Valencia, Calif.,, Larry and Sarah Phillips of Belle Rive,, Gary Phillips of Mt. Vernon, Randy and Darla Phillips of Dahlgren, Bill Phillips of Muskegon, Mich., Betty Ostby of Muskegon, Mich., Janet (Mendenhall) Litton of Mt. Vernon and Lowell and Judy Mendenhall of Olive Branch; great-nieces and great-nephews Braqndon Phillips and family of O’Fallon, Hillary (Phillips) Hoy and family of Fairview Heights Corey Phillips and family of Belle Rive, Michelle (Phillips) Rightnower and family of Mt. Vernon, Timesha (Phillips) McGowen and family of Waltonville and Wesley Phillips and family of Bluford; special cousins, Bob Greene and Myrna Bayer of Tennessee, Jacque Fischer of Washington State and Robert Williamson of Virginia Beach, Va.. Gladys is also survived by her church family and several other close friends including Roy and Theresa Yanez, Sharon, Henry and Andrew Overby, Kay Baker and several other neighbors. She will be missed terribly by her caregiver and close friend, Lori Peterson and her husband Scott and daughter Harlie; her honorably adopted family, Angie Warf, along with Brother Richard McCormick and his family; special friends, Raymond and Jean Parker and Mike Gaston, the Marlow family along with special friends from Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church and several other special friends, too many to list. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband; all three brothers, Curtis, Ivan and Nolan Phillips; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Imogene Phillips; nieces, Dora (Shaw) Dyer and Shirley (Shaw) Phillips; nephew, Don Ostby; and special friend, Frank Baker. Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Revs. Richard McCormick and Jeremy Hamson officiating. Burial was at Opdyke Cemetery in Opdyke. Visitation was from 5 to 8 pm. Friday, May 16, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
