James William Cross, 88, formerly of Dahlgren, passed away in Mt. Vernon on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, at 1:48 a.m. He was born on October 22, 1926, in Hamilton County, the son of Marion Cross and Viola (Little) Cross. He married Mary Maxine Parkhill on Jan. 31, 1951, and she survives. Survivors include his wife, Mary Maxine Cross of Dahlgren; two sons, William (Bud) Cross and wife Ellen of Riverton and J.D. Cross and wife Jean of Dahlgren; four daughters, Viola Nolen and husband Rusty of Dahlgren, Betty Oliver and husband Mike of Mt. Vernon, Pauline Bellamy and friend Janice Franklin of Mt. Vernon and Mary Jo Kline and husband Keith of Salem; three half brothers, Gabe Cross of Dahlgren, John Cross of McLeansboro, Steve Cross of Mt. Vernon; three half sisters, Gaila Tyne and Dorothy Horton both of Streator and Marilyn Karcher of Dahlgren; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Leona Kay Blain; one stepmother, June Cross; four brothers, Elsa Cross, Joe Cross, Gerald Cross and Wayne Cross. He was a farmer. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the McLeansboro American Legion Post 106. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren with the Rev. David Schlag officiating. Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. Burial will be held at Middle Creek Cemetery near Dahlgren with graveside military rites by the American Legion Post 106. Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren will be charge of all of the arrangements.
