Joe's Story

Text size

Joe M. Malle, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Mt. Vernon on July 30, 2015, at 9:33 p.m. in the loving embrace of his wife of 30 years. Joe was born June 9, 1926, in Valier, a first son for parents Joe M. and Nellie (Boudoux) Malle after three daughters, Louise Phelps, Carman Slade and Agnes Graham. He married Judith A. (Lowery) Patton on Oct. 6, 1984, and inherited two loving daughters who thought the world of him, Kimberly (Patton) Karch and husband Harold (Pody) of Evanston and Heather (Patton) Watkins of Troy. A proud and honored veteran, Joe served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 9233, Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141, as well as Logan Street Baptist Church. He worked for the State of Illinois for 30 years as a meat inspector supervisor. Joe adored his family and his dogs, working in the garden, volunteering his time for the local food bank, collecting any recipe he could get his hands on, meeting old friends for coffee at the crack of dawn, baking pies, telling stories, going to church and always being the first one up and the first one to bed (usually with the dogs). Joe is survived by his wife; two daughters; two grandchildren, Seth and Chloe Watkins; and several nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. Per his wishes, Mr. Malle will be cremated and a gathering of family and friends was held to celebrate his memory from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A celebration of life service followed with the Rev. Ron Trotter officiating. The Chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 conducted a flag presentation service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Angel’s Cove and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Hughey Funeral Home where you may call 242-3348 or visit www.hugheyfuneralhome1969.com for further information and to send condolences.
