John Donald Engel, 88, McLeansboro resident, died at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014 at McLeansboro Health Care and Rehab Center in McLeansboro. He was a farmer, and served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the Philippines. John was born July 23, 1926 in Piopolis, the son of Charles Nicholas “Nick” and Theresa (Heil) Engel. He married Geraldine E. “Jerry” (Marsh) on April 28, 1951 at St. Clement's Catholic Church. She passed away Feb. 13, 2010. He was a member of St. Clement’s Catholic Church in McLeansboro, past member of the M.T.H.S. Board of Education, McLeansboro Township Supervisor, Hamilton County Board, founding member of B.P.O.E. #1882, FOE 2699, American Legion Post 106 and known as the “Apple Man”. Surviving are a daughter, Jetta Karcher of McLeansboro; two grandsons, Ryan (Lorna) Karcher of Fairview Heights, IL and Jeffrey (Nicole) Karcher of McLeansboro; one granddaughter, Juliana Karcher of McLeansboro; and four great-grandchildren, Layton, Kaelee, Elayna and Brennan Karcher. Funeral services for John Donald Engel will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 4 at St. Clement’s Catholic Church in McLeansboro with Father Slawomir Ptak. Interment will be in St. Clement’s Catholic Church Cemetery at McLeansboro. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 3, at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jerry, son-in-law Rodney Karcher, sisters Juanita Webb and Viola Schilling. Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro is in charge of all the arrangements.
