John Joseph Hoerler, 93, of McLeansboro, passed away on Sept. 12, 2016, at his second home in Gulfport, Miss.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Bill Reed officiated. Visitation was on Sept. 18 at Harre Funeral Home. Burial followed the funeral at St. Clements Catholic Cemetery in McLeansboro. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harre Funeral Home.
John was born in Hillsdale on April 18, 1923. He graduated from Erie High School and attended the University of Illinois.
John married Margaret Spruell on May 9, 1969, and they were married 48 years.
John retired from the Internal Revenue Service. He enjoyed playing cards. He was a member of the McLeansboro Elks Club and was a past Exalted Ruler.
John is survived by his wife, Margaret (Maggie); children, Diane Basham of Fayetteville, Ga., Danette (Duane) Lester of Snellville, Ga., Dennis (Lynda) Hoerler of Atlanta and Drew (Kathy) Hoerler of Stone Mountain, Ga.; grandchildren, Scott (Ana) Spoonamore, Joy Basham, Clay Spoonamore, Ashley Bryant, Chris (Erin) Hoerler, Mike (Kristen) Basham, Mandy (Brian) Burnham and Tyler Lester; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Joe Spruell; sisters-in-law, Maxine Hoerler, Jean Spruell and Betty Spruell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Charlotte (Burns) Hoerler; brother, Donald Hoerler; and son, David Hoerler.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to McCoy Memorial Library, 130 South Washington St., McLeansboro, IL.
