John T. Mitchell, 79, of McLeansboro, died 5:32 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born May 1, 1935, in Broughton, the son of Mark and Nellie (Ruphard) Mitchell. He married Clara Louise Herzing on June 28, 1960, and she preceded him in death. He was a retired oil field worker and also worked at Nascote Company in Nashville. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 with the rank of corporal. He is survived by sons, Tim Mitchell and wife Jane of McLeansboro, Tom Mitchell of McLeansboro, Dan Mitchell and wife Cynthia of McLeansboro and Dave Mitchell of McLeansboro; nine grandchildren, Tarena Mellington, Lauren Seidel, Jacob Mitchell, Caleb Mitchell, Corinth Cantrell, Logan Mitchell, Zoey Mitchell, Jagger Mitchell and Tysen Mitchell; two great-grandchildren, Dawson Seidel and Bexley Mellington; special friends Tina Mayberry and her son Riley David; and siblings, Everett Mitchell of McLeansboro, Elizabeth Short of Broughton, Ottilee Kaufman of McLeansboro, Dena Craddock of Enfield, Vada Faye Webber of O’Fallon and Ruthie Holcomb of Eldorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Ikey Mitchell; and infant brother, Jerry Lewis Mitchell. Funeral service were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried officiating. Interment was at Hopewell Cemetery near McLeansboro. Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
