Laura Nelle Shelton, age 93, a resident of Dahlgren, passed away at 1:17 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Lavender Ridge in Mt. Vernon. Laura was born Feb. 21, 1923, in Belle Rive, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Laird) Baker. She married Dallas T. Shelton on Oct. 18, 1941; he preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 2006. She was also preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Frank Baker. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1941. Laura was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Dahlgren United Methodist Church and served as its music director/pianist for many years. Her passion was being a good homemaker, cooking, singing, playing piano (by ear), and reading. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by two daughters, Janet (Joe) Harrison of Bloomington and Linda (Tony) Traylor of Dahlgren; seven grandchildren, Janel (Mark) Clauss of Bloomington, Jared (Jennifer) Harrison of Bloomington, Jolene (Willis) Galloway of Lake Zurich, Tracy Traylor of Collinsville, Andrew (Deidra) Traylor of Dahlgren, Melissa (Derek) Benbrook of McLeansboro and Adam Traylor of Dahlgren; eight great-grandchildren, Mara Jane and Jamison Clauss, Jake, Johny and Jorgi Harrison, Charles Hayes Galloway and Dylan and Dallas Benbrook; and special nephew, Gary Shelton and wife Evelyn of Dahlgren. Her funeral will be at the Dahlgren United Methodist Church in Dahlgren 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, with the Rev. Gary Whipple officiating. Preceding the funeral, visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Dahlgren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the church, or at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren, which is in charge of the arrangements.
