Mary's Story

Mary Margaret Gholson, 91, resident of Carrier Mills Nursing Home, passed from this life on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, surrounded by her children. Mary was born in the Feakyville Community near Broughton on Sept. 20, 1924. She was the second of six children born to the late Edo and Lucille Melton. On Nov. 1, 1941, Mary wed Charles W. (Bill) Gholson of the Broughton community. Bill preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1984. Mary was a loving and dedicated farm wife, raising five children and they survive: Fran (Marion) Daily of Harrisburg, Ted (Ann) Gholson of Eldorado, Danny (Betty) Gholson of Raleigh, Nancy Langford (John Beaver) of Broughton and Nadine (Mark) Williams of Herod. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Chuck (Tammy) Daily of Glassford, Tina (Steve) Holland of Bedford, Texas, Beth Gholson, Michael Gholson of Raleigh, Amy Gholson of Eldorado, Mark Gholson of Raleigh and Molly Williams of Boston; and two great-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by a brother, Cork Melton of Eldorado. Preceding Mary in death along with her husband and parents were two grandsons, Scott and Matthew Gholson; a sister, Anna Belle Griswold; and two brothers, Harrell and Dutch Melton. Mary was a member of the Broughton United Methodist Church and later attended Mt. Pleasant Social Brethren Church in Raleigh. Mary was a founding member of the Ferrell Hospital Auxiliary in Eldorado. She truly enjoyed her volunteer service for many years. Services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Bill Gholson officiating. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial was in Douglass Cemetery in Eldorado. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado is in charge of the arrangements.
