Matthew A. “Matt” Wellen, 69, formerly of Dahlgren, passed away 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, near Piopolis. He was born Jan. 3, 1946, in McLeansboro, the son of Henry Wellen and Mary C. (Wilhelm) Wellen. He is survived by four brothers, John Wellen and wife Minnie of Dahlgren; Joseph Wellen of Dahlgren; Earl Wellen of Dahlgren; and Frank Wellen and wife Sharon of Broughton. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Wellen; and three sisters, Dorothy (Wellen) Horn, Mary Rapp and Eileen Wellen. He was a farmer. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in McLeansboro. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis. Father Slawomir Ptak will be conducting the funeral mass. The visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery in Piopolis. Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro will be in charge of all of the arrangements.
