Ronald D. Ewald, 66, formerly of Dahlgren, passed away at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at 12:15 p.m. He was born on Jan. 6, 1949, in Hamilton County, the son of George L. Ewald and Lily Marguerite (Hutchcraft) Ewald. He married Rita Johnson and she survives. Survivors include his wife, Rita Ewald of Dahlgren; one twin brother, Donald Ewald and wife Regenia of Dahlgren; one brother-in-law, Robert Johnson of Edwardsville; one sister-in-law, Patricia Buhse and husband Rick of O'Fallon, Mo.; one aunt, Stella Ewald of Dahlgren; four nieces, Sherry Ewald, Shalonda Snider, Shanice Ewald and Stephanie Buhse; four nephews, Shawn Ewald, Shane Ewald, Brett Ewald and Michael Buhse; several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jacqulin Joan Ewald. On November 5, 1996, he was elected Hamilton County coroner and was reelected until his retirement on Jan. 31, 2015, due to health problems. He was elected Nov. 3, 1992 to the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors and served as a past Chairman. He served as a dispatcher in Hamilton County Sheriff's Office from 1981-1991. He was a third degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren. Fr. Slawomir Ptak will conduct the funeral mass. The visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015, at the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. The Rosary was at 7 p.m. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the church building fund or the Disabled Veterans fund and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren.
