Melvin R. Phipps, 84, a resident of McLeansboro, IL, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Hamilton County, IL on December 24, 1932 to Raymond and Iva (Miller) Phipps. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War. Mr. Phipps also owned and operated Phipps Excavation Service for many years following his military service and he was also a member of the First General Baptist Church in McLeansboro.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Sue Phipps of McLeansboro; one son, David (friend Connie) Phipps of McLeansboro; one daughter, Helen Phipps of Collinsville, IL; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Phipps; and one great-granddaughter, Bella Phipps.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Maxine Rhorer.
Funeral services for Melvin Phipps will be held Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Jake Gray officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Memorial donations may be made to the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Auxillary and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
